Fuglsang told Danish broadcaster TV2 (opens in new tab) that his dream is to race for a Danish team next year.

"I don't know what will happen with NTT. I still have one year left on my contract with Astana, so something strange would have to happen."

"But if Bjarne is successful, and especially if we can get a Danish sponsor, it would be great if we could start a Danish team and a Danish Tour as much as possible."

Riis, who won the Tour in 1996, coached the CSC/Saxo Bank/Tinkoff team from 1999 to 2015, with Fuglsang racing under him in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Fuglsang won the Tour of Denmark both years and made his Tour debut in 2010, finishing 50th.

The 35-year-old is currently enjoying the best success of his career in Astana, including stage wins at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Criterium du Dauphiné, and last year's Vuelta a España.

Meanwhile, Riis returned to World Tour cycling this year as team director for NTT. He will also become part-owner of the team through his partnership group Virtu Cycling, though this deal was not finalized in early June.

The team currently has Lars Mikkelsen and Lars Bak as Direktor Sportif, with Michal Walgren, Andreas Stockbro and Michal Kabel on the roster.

"I spoke with Bjarne last year before extending his contract. 'I was going to start my Tour with a team in Denmark. So I don't know if I'm going to end my career with a Kazakh team or what.

"If my contract is terminated, I think I need to talk to [Astana general manager] Alexandre Vinokurov. However, this is all without anything being decided."

Fuglsang, who opened the season by winning the Vuelta a Andalucía for the second year in a row, will return to racing at the Strade Bianche on August 1. He will ride primarily on the Italian program through the fall, with the Tour de Pollogne also on the schedule.
