Organizers of the Tour of Hungary have announced the five WorldTour teams and six professional teams that will participate in the event, which will run from August 29 to September 2. This 2.1 event coincides with the first week of the Tour de France, but will be an opportunity for WorldTour riders not participating in the French Grand Tour.
A total of 20 teams will participate in the Tour of Hungary, with world teams including Israel's Startup Nation, defending champion Kriszt Neilands' team, Mitchelton Scott, CCC Team, and Trek Segafredo, Jumbo Visma, among others, have been selected to participate.
Pro teams competing will include Androni-Giocattoli-Sidelmec, Alpecin-Phoenix, Bingoal-Waloney Bruxelles, Novo Nordisk, Vini-Zabu-KTM, and Uno-X Pro Cycling Team.
Continental teams on the starting line include Jyoti Victoria-Palomar, Cometa-Exstra, Adria Mobil, and Team Novak.
2020 was supposed to be a big year for Hungarian cycling; the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic forced organizers to cancel the Hungarian stage and postpone the Italian Grand Tour. The race was rescheduled for October 3-25.
The Giro d'Italia was scheduled to start with an individual time trial in Budapest on Saturday, May 9, followed by a stage from Budapest to Gyor and a flat stage from Seces Fehervar to Nagykanizsa before flying to Sicily.
Hungarian Insider (opens in new tab) reports that a possible second wave of coronavirus made it impossible to hold the opening three stages in Hungary. The report suggested that the organizers proposed instead to hold the Giro d'Italia Grande Partenza in Hungary in May 2021.
Excluding the national championships, the only UCI-sanctioned road races to be held in Hungary this year will be the One Belt One Road (August 16-17), Visegrad 4 Kerek Palverseny (August 19), Visegrad 4 Junior (August 26-28), and Tour of Hungary (August 29-9). (August 2)) were the only four.
