Pinarello updates Prince and reintroduces Paris in 2021

Pinarello today unveiled not one, but two new bikes as it moves into the 2021 model year, with the Prince, Pinarello's affordable race bike, getting a facelift and the old name Paris rejoining the lineup as Pinarello's latest endurance bike.

The new bikes come with a new geometry chart and both models are given nine sizes ranging from 43 cm to 60 cm. The standout feature added this time, however, is the compression of the intermediate size options. According to Pinarello, the center of the bell curve that most riders seek falls between the 51.5 cm and 56 cm frames, so in order to provide a more accurate size, Pinarello has reduced the 53 cm and 54.5 cm frame sizes.

Pinarello's asymmetrical frame shape, flat back tubing, onda fork and stay design, and concave downtube design are used.

The Prince is available in two different frame material specifications, with both disc-brake and non-disc-brake models available internationally, but we are told that UK customers will only receive disc brakes. Major updates include increased tire clearance from 25mm to 28mm, improved aerodynamics, and integrated cable routing thanks to new components from Pinarello's component subsidiary Mosto.

Four models are available:

All are made of Toray T700 carbon fiber with a unidirectional finish that Pinarello claims enables weight reduction. The Prince FX uses the higher modulus carbon fiber T800 (3K weave). Frame weights are not disclosed for either model.

All four models share the same geometry chart, but have been updated for 2021, placing them between the current Prince model and the brand's thoroughbred race bike, the Dogma F12.

While the Prince undoubtedly shares features, genes, and DNA with the Dogma F12, Pinarello has stated that for 2021 it aimed to create a family of pure race bikes rather than a more aggressive geometry. The new Prince has a higher stack and slightly shorter reach than the current model.

As has been the theme of recent bike launches (and as permeating the technology from top to bottom), the new Prince features an integrated cockpit and Pinarello's TiCR (Total Internal Cable Routing) system, with a new Direct cable routing inside the Most Jaguar handlebar and directly to the front of the new Most Tiger stem. This system simplifies positional adjustments by utilizing a divisible headset spacer, rather than having to re-route cables throughout the entire front end if the bar or stem needs to be replaced. The system is also guaranteed to be compatible with Most's one-piece Talon Ultra.

According to Pinarello, TiCR reduces cable and wire aerodynamic drag by 85 percent, with the remaining 15 percent affected by the short housing section exposed outside the frame.

With the introduction of internal cables, Pinarello had to increase the size of the head tube, but took the opportunity to improve the aerodynamics of the shape.

Indeed, the head tube was one of many tube shapes overhauled for 2021, and the Prince has been updated almost entirely. In addition to the new seatstays, chainstays, and fork blades, Pinarello widened the downtube to the same width as the Dogma, but made it 3 mm smaller in the vertical plane. By doing so, Pinarello claims to have improved longitudinal compliance and comfort while maintaining the lateral stiffness and power transfer efficiency of the old Prince. With this down tube and bottle-wrapping concave shape, Pinarello also changed the shape of the bottom bracket so that the bottle sits 5mm lower on the seat tube.

The chainstays at the rear of the bottom bracket have been replaced with a square shape that Pinarello claims improves rigidity by 10%. It has also been widened to accommodate tires up to 28 mm, although Pinarello admits that the overall gap is a modest 37.5 mm.

Throughout, the frame takes a page from Pinarello's playbook and adopts the aggressive asymmetrical design of the Dogma F12. To the same end, Pinarello applied a similar solution to the fork on the disc brake models, increasing the size of the fork blades on the non-drive side to account for braking power, while giving them a distinctive onda shape that is said to improve vibration absorption from the road surface.

Based on the Gan K, the Paris is definitely positioned as an endurance bike, but the Onda fork and seatstays, aerodynamic cues throughout, and exaggerated left-right The Onda fork and seatstays, the aerodynamic cues throughout, and the exaggerated asymmetrical design are all inspired by the brand's racer models. The company claims that the bike offers a stable and comfortable ride while embodying the brand's racing DNA.

Only one material is available, and the Paris frame is made of the more budget-friendly Unidirectional T600 Toray carbon fiber. Frame weight is 980 g for the 53 cm.

Tire clearance is 30 mm, with 42 mm at the chainstays and 45 mm at the fork, again modest recommendations from Pinarello.

If the geometry chart is accurate, the geometry of the Endurance Paris is slightly more aggressive on the Paris, with the stack only 1 mm different and the reach within 3 mm.

Pinarello places equal emphasis on the aerodynamics of the Paris, arguing that the culmination of marginal gains is greater on a bike ridden over long distances. According to Pinarello, Paris "applies a series of aerodynamic precautions" but does not elaborate on what they are. However, two that are mentioned are fork flaps and FlatBack tube geometry on the downtube and seat tube.

In addition to aerodynamic optimization, the tubes are optimized individually, blending stiffness and compliance as needed. The down tube and head tube are oversized for optimal power transfer, while the seatstays and top tube are narrower for increased flexibility for comfort.
