Anthony Turgis has signed a two-year contract extension with Total Direct Energie, the team reported. The 26-year-old Frenchman joined the French professional team from Cofidis at the start of the 2019 season.
"I was able to fit in with the team right away and that has helped me have a good first season," Turgis said in a team press release on Sunday. I have a trusting relationship with the staff, so there was no reason for me to leave."
"I am always very interested in the Flanders Classics. I'm always very interested in the Flanders Classics. It's a goal I set with the team to be at my best in that race," added the 26-year-old. Last season, Turgis finished 18th in Roubaix in the first race of his career.
"The Tour de France remains another very important race for us," said Turgis, who has competed in the last two Tours. The team will be narrowed down to eight finalists in the coming weeks.
Last season, Turgis won the team's first GP La Marseillaise, finished second in the Doire de Vranderen, and 18th in Roubaix the same spring.
He continued his strong start to the 2020 season with an eighth-place finish in La Marseillaise and a second-place finish in the opening stage of the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var.
"I am very happy to continue my adventure here and will continue to give everything for the team," said Turgis.
Team manager Jean-Rene Bernadeau is also looking at the possibility of further strengthening the team with players like Romain Bardet and Pierre Latour, who are currently paired up at AG2R La Mondiale.
"We are looking for riders who can shine in the mountains, and Pierre is one of them, like Romain Bardet," Bernaudeau said last week.
Bardet said this weekend that he is ready to share the AG2R lead with Latour at this year's Tour de France.
