Towns on Milan-San Remo route express concern about traffic and coronavirus

Mayors of several towns along the second part of the Milan-San Remo race route, located on the coast of the Italian province of Savona, have expressed concern to the event organizer, RCS, about coronavirus by people who may stand along the race route. At the same time, they stated that closing the roads would be especially difficult because the race, which has been postponed to August 8, will take place in the middle of the summer holidays.

"L'Equipe" quoted "Savona News" this weekend as reporting that many mayors have expressed concern about the RCS and that in some cases they may be forced to find alternative routes.

August is the traditional summer vacation period in Italy, when many office workers and families head to the coast to enjoy the warm weather, along with tourists from other regions.

"We have the utmost respect for cycling and sacred races like Milan-San Remo, but at a time like this, with the absurd situation regarding the main roads, peak tourism, and all the usual problems faced during the summer season made worse by COVID-19, the race date did not seem the best I didn't think it was the best choice," Giancarlo Canepa, mayor of Borghetto Santo Spirito, told Svsport.it.

"We welcome things to start getting back to normal, but we have a thousand problems we have to deal with. It would have been much better timing if Milan-San Remo had been held in September."

Milan-San Remo is usually held in March. Last season, Julien Alaphilippe of Dečuninck-Quickstep won the event, and the Frenchman will return to defend his title on August 8.

According to L'Equipe, representatives of the RCS, along with the local mayor and the governor of Savona, will inspect the roads in question to find a solution.
