Androni Giocattoli and Gazprom Miss Sibiu Tour; COVID-19 Surges in Romania

The Androni Giocattoli and Gazprom Rusvelo teams have pulled out of the Sibiu Tour, which was scheduled to take place Thursday in Romania.

The four-day Sibiu Tour was supposed to be one of the first international pro stage races in Europe since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March. Last week, however, Mathieu van der Pol and his Alpecin Phoenix team withdrew from the four-day race after the Dutch Foreign Ministry declared Romania an "orange zone" and recommended "necessary travel only."

Beulah Hansgrohe and the Israeli Startup Nation WorldTour team will be taking part in the Sibiu Tour, while sprinters Pascal Ackermann and Patrick Conrad will lead the German team. Beulah Hansgrohe admitted to Cycling News that she currently intends to race, but said she is watching the situation carefully. Other names on the entry list are Nippo-Delco, Vini-Zabu-KTM, and Bardiani-CSF.

According to Italian press reports, this latest information has prompted Androni Giocattoli's team doctor, Maurizio Vicini, to recommend that the rider and staff refrain from participating in the race in order to protect their health. Androni Giacatori's first race will be the Strade Bianche in Italy on August 1.

Gazprom Rusvelo announced via social media that he would not be able to participate in the Sibiu Tour due to restrictions on Russian citizens in Romania.

According to press reports, a record 899 new COVID-19 cases were discovered in Romania on Saturday, preventing the Romanian Constitutional Court from enforcing a 14-day quarantine period by the government.

As a result, some 750 people who tested positive for COVID-19 left Romanian hospitals against the advice of their doctors, according to the latest figures from the Romanian Health Ministry.

On Sunday, the Romanian government extended the country's state of emergency for another 30 days, warning that the number of infections will continue to rise and that if the current upward trend continues, up to 1,600 new coronavirus cases a day could occur by mid-August.
