The EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg World Tour will not take place in 2020 after organizers canceled the event due to coronavirus concerns.
The German one-day race, known as the Sprinter's Classic, was originally scheduled to take place on August 16, but was postponed to October 3 after the season was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday, organizers released a statement announcing that the 2020 event, which includes a World Tour race as well as a large participation event, has been cancelled entirely.
"When we postponed the EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg from its original date of August 16 to October 3, 2020, we were confident that we could still host a special event on the later date.
"Unfortunately, due to reasons related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and further discussions with the local authorities in Hamburg, EuroEyes Cyclasix Hamburg cannot be held in 2020 and will be held again on August 22, 2021.
The cancellation brings the World Tour calendar to 26 events, five of which (Tour Down Under, Great Ocean Road Race, UAE Tour, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, and Paris-Nice) were held before the season interruption.
The Hamburg Classic was followed by the Eschborn-Frankfurt, another German World Tour one-day race, which was cancelled. Seven other World Tour events decided not to host 2021 events on the changed calendar: the E3 Binkbank Classic, Tour de Romandie, Tour de Suisse, Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Iturria Basque, and Clasica San Sebastian, Ride London.
Elia Viviani has won the Euro Eyes Cyclassics Hamburg on three previous occasions. In any case, the Italian was supposed to ride the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia on October 3.
The Vuelta a Burgos will be held next week, and the WorldTour will be back in action on August 1 with the Strade Bianche.
