Cyclists' Alliance Concerned About COVID Protocol in Spanish Races
[Emacmén Nafaroaco Classicoa, Clasica Femenina Navarra, and Durango Durango Emacmén Sarria will be held on July 23, 24, and 26, respectively. However, the riders' organization, The Cyclists' Alliance (TCA), warns that all recommendations for safety from the COVID-19 coronavirus may not be followed.

In an announcement on its website Wednesday, the TCA warned that after consulting with medical advisors, "there are significant risks that may not have been adequately mitigated."

While the number of new COVID-19 cases per day for Spain as a whole averages only 18 new cases per 100,000 population per week, the TCA said the number of cases in the Navarra region has reached 53 cases per 100,000 people per week. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak in the region is classified as Phase 4, or "sustained human-to-human transmission," a high-risk condition one level below a Phase 5/pandemic. [We are of the opinion that the risk assessment for tomorrow's race may be rated "high," and this, together with the following, gives TCA cause for concern," they write.

The TCA understands that "there is insufficient evidence that the COVID protocol has been followed, that teams have not received details of the risk assessment from the race organizers," and that "not all teams have performed the [COVID-19] RT-PCR test required by the UCI protocol." He said.

"We were looking forward to the race resuming tomorrow (Thursday) in Spain. We know that many of you are already in the race, but as always, your safety is our top priority," the Federation of Cyclists wrote.

"In order to ensure the safety of the rest of the race calendar, it is very important that appropriate decisions are made when races with high risk factors are scheduled.

The TCA offered to discuss the rights of riders "in this unprecedented situation" with the members involved.
