The infamous Mur van Geraasbergen and Teigenberg will feature in the Belgian Championships (Elite Men), which has been postponed to September 22.
According to Sporza.be (opens in new tab), the race, which will take place two days after the end of the Tour de France and during the UCI Road World Championships, is 235.8 km long.
The elite men will start in Halle and run a large 104 km lap, then Anzegem for seven laps of an 18.8 km local circuit.
According to race director Eric Demetz, the climb, also known as the Kapellmühl after the chapel at the top, is "a mythical hill that we really wanted to include on the course." [The Tegenberg, frequently used in Flemish races such as Ghent-Wevelgem, E3 Hallerbeke, and Coure Brussel-Koenne, is only 750 meters long, with an average gradient of 5.6% and a maximum gradient of 9%. However, riders will feel it on the last lap, as it is done twice per lap, for a total of 14 times.
Yves Lampert (Deceuninck-Quick Step) speculated that Thomas De Gendt would have the advantage, but that was before the route was announced.
Deceuninck-QuickStep manager Patrick Lefevere believes the course will favor riders finishing the Tour de France. He said, "If you grit your teeth for two hours, your sore legs will be good legs. After the Tour, Tegenbark will feel like a bridge. They will fly to the bridge."
The elite women will also compete for the title on the same course, but the race will take place one day after the elite women's time trial at the world championships.
While this may be bad news for defending champion Tim Merlier (Phoenix-Alpecin), it will be a welcome course for classics specialists like Greg Van Avermaat (CCC Team).
The Belgian Championships, normally held in June, were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The UCI allocated the weekend of August 22-23 for the national championships, but the Belgian federation opted to move the race to September due to a sports ban in place until August 31.
The Belgian time trial championships will be held on August 20 in Coxaide.
