Jumbo Visma announced the teams for three upcoming races on Saturday, revealing that Belgian Wout Van Aert will lead the team in the Strade Bianche on August 1, the first World Tour race since the Coronavirus interruption.
Van Aert, a two-time podium finisher in Siena, is recovering from devastating injuries sustained in a crash at last year's Tour de France and will be looking for another good result in the gravel road classic.
"Since the beginning of June, I have been working specifically to get back into the season. "At the training camp in Tignes, we put the finishing touches on the last of the work. My goal is to run well right away and to keep this up for as long as possible. Strade Bianche is a very good race."
Last year, Van Aert started his first full road season with Jumbo-Visma on a high note, finishing third in Strade Bianche, second in the E3 Binkbank Classic, and stage wins in the Criterium du Dauphiné and Tour de France. However, after having his hip gouged out by a loose barricade during a time trial at the Tour last July, Van Aat endured two surgeries and months of rehabilitation before returning to the highest level.
He entered the 2020 season as an unknown quantity, finishing 11th at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, his first and only appearance before the coronavirus pandemic closed all sporting events. Now, with strict hygiene protocols and COVID-19 inspections in place, racing has tentatively resumed and Van Aert hopes to show that he is back to his best.
"In the past I have raced well after training periods, and after two podium finishes, I will be looking for another top finish."
Van Aert is also looking to get back on the podium.
At his side are Tour de France stage winner Mike Tunissen, who surprised on the opening stage and wore the maillot jaune, and Amund Janssen, Paul Martens, Maarten Weinants, Antoine Torhoek, and Bert-Jan Lindemann. There are.
"They are all strong. So not only me, but also riders like Mike and Amundo should have ambition. We will do everything we can to get a good result."
