Italy imposes 14-day quarantine on athletes returning from Romania

Italy's health minister announced Friday that he has signed an ordinance imposing a 14-day quarantine on riders returning from Romania and Bulgaria, including those currently competing in the Sibiu Cycling Tour. According to Gazzetta dello Sport (opens in new tab), the ordinance affects 38 Italian riders, including Davide Rebellin and Andrea Guardini, who will not be able to compete in Italy until August 11 when the season resumes.

"I have just signed an ordinance ordering the quarantine of players who have been in Romania and Bulgaria for the past 14 days," the country's Health Minister Roberto Speranza posted on Twitter on Friday. The measure is already in place for non-EU and Schengen countries. The virus has not been eradicated and continues to circulate. Great care must be taken.

Twenty-two teams are competing in the Sibiu Cycling Tour, which began on July 23 and concludes on Sunday. They are Israel Startup Nation and Bora Hansgrohe. The latter has won three of the four opening stages and is the overall leader with Gregor Mühlberger.

There are three Italian-based professional teams: Nippo Delko One Provence, Vini Zabu-KTM, and Bardiani-CSF-Faizane, and three Italian continental teams: Damico-UM-Tours, Cycling Team Friuli ASD, and Work Service Dynatec Vega.

In recent weeks, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs has designated Romania an "orange zone" and advised "necessary travel only" due to a sharp increase in cases of COVID-19 coronavirus in Romania and Bulgaria.

Androni Giocattoli Sidermec also missed the race to protect the health of the riders and staff.
