Pirelli has launched two tubeless versions of its P Zero Velo all-around race tire. Developed with the advantages of tubeless technology, the new road bike tires are said to outperform all road bike tires, including tubulars, that Italian tire specialist Pirelli has produced to date.
Previously, Pirelli had offered the Cinturato Velo as a tubeless road tire, with an emphasis on durability. However, after three years of collaboration with Mitchelton Scott and Trek-Segafredo World Tour riders, Pirelli has succeeded in bringing the advantages of tubeless technology to racing tires.
For some time now, Pirelli has been working with WorldTour teams to develop tubeless tires, and in March we reported on the sighting of an unannounced tire on Mitchelton Scott's Annemiek van Grooten training bike. [The P Zero Race TLR SL and P Zero Race TLR are available in versions with Techwall and Techwall+ casing technology. The P Zero Race TLR with Techwall combines high puncture protection and weight ratio for all-round performance, whereas the SL version with Techwall sacrifices protection for weight savings and increased rolling resistance.
Pirelli has also updated the rubber compound of its new tubeless P Zero tires with a Smart Evo compound that improves grip in dry and wet conditions while maintaining low rolling resistance. Two tread patterns are available, with the P Zero Race TLR using the existing Compression Z tread pattern, while the SL version has a smoother texture with two sipes running down the center of the tire.
Pirelli offers sizes from 24c to 30c for the standard model and 24c to 28c for the SL version. For better fitting, Pirelli has developed rim compatibility using ETRTO standards and the tires are optimized for the latest wide rims. For riders who want to check the necessary clearances, Pirelli provides the width (WAM) and outside diameter (RAM) of the tire when fitted on 17c, 19c and 21c ETRTO rims.
Pirelli provides a comprehensive table of recommended tire pressures for each size tire for best performance, taking into account different rim widths, rider weight, weather and riding style.
In terms of weight, the P Zero Race TLR SL 700x24C is the lightest at 230g, while the P Zero Race TLR 700x30C is the heaviest at 320g.
We already have our hands on the P Zero Race TLS SL tires and will bring you a full review once we get some mileage out of them.
Pirelli has priced the standard P Zero Race TLR at $79.90/€69.90/TBC pound and the lighter P Zero RACE TLR SL at $84.90/€74.90/TBC pound.
