Israel Startup Nation Pulls Players from Vuelta a Burgos Amid Coronavirus Riots

Israel Startup Nation will start the Vuelta a Burgos with one absent, as Itamar Einhorn has been tied as the main contact with Omer Goldstein, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Goldstein, who was scheduled to resume racing next week, is asymptomatic and has since been quarantined.

Einhorn was the only rider who had direct contact with Goldstein prior to his arrival in Burgos, and the team is awaiting his test results, but as a precautionary measure has not allowed him to race.

"Although the results of additional tests are not yet available, the team doctors have decided to remove Einhorn from the team in Burgos as a precautionary measure and to continue monitoring the situation," Israel Startup Nation said in a statement.

"Team ISN operates under the full supervision of the team doctor, following strict internal protocols, UCI guidelines and UCI protocols, and will take every precaution to ensure that the health of its members as well as the general public is protected."

The team also sent staff and riders who may have been "in close proximity" to Goldstein over the past few days, including those who had already arrived at the team hotel in Burgos, for a new COVID-19 test, but only Einhorn had direct contact with him.

"Team ISN has adopted strict guidelines and protocols for the current pandemic and respects the local authorities and UCI guidelines for returning to racing. We consider it our professional and personal duty to protect the health of those around us."

"The health of the athletes and staff is continuously monitored by the team, including a series of COVID-19 tests conducted in recent weeks prior to their return to competition. So far, most have been negative.

The incubation period for COVID-19 is 5-7 days after exposure to an infected person; according to Harvard Health Publishing, nasal swab PCR testing on the day of contact with a COVID-19 infected person has a 100% chance of giving a false negative result. The false-positive rate drops to 40% after four days and to 20% when tested three days after symptoms appear. It is very rare for a person to test positive and not be infected with COVID-19.

The Vuelta a Burgos will begin on Tuesday with 153 riders on the start line for the 157-km stage from the Catedral de Burgos to the Mirador del Castillo.
