Schachmann Extends Four-Year Contract with Beulah Hansgrohe

Max Schachmann has signed a four-year contract extension with Bora Hansgrohe.

In June, Schachmann admitted that he was in negotiations with several teams, but chose to remain with Bora-Hansgrohe on a long-term contract.

"I have developed very well in this team and I feel very comfortable here," Schachmann said in a statement released by the team on Wednesday.

"So it goes without saying that I am looking forward to our future together, and with this new long-term contract there is a lot of confidence in me. At the moment I am quite versatile as a rider and together we will see in the coming years which races I can best fulfill my potential. At Bora Hansgrohe, I feel that I will be perfectly supported on this journey."

The German champion arrives in Beulah-Hansgrohe in 2019 after a successful run in Quick Step. He enjoyed a great debut season with the team, winning three stages in the Tour of the Basque Country and finishing third in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Schachmann carried that form into 2020, finishing second overall at the Volta ao Algarve and winning Paris-Nice, the final race of the World Tour before the season was interrupted by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The 26-year-old will resume his 2020 season on Saturday at Strade Bianche. He will also compete in the Tour de Pollogne and Ile Lombardia ahead of the Tour de France, where Emmanuel Buchmann will be aiming for overall victory. Schachmann will compete in both the Ardennes Classics and the Cobbled Classics in October.

Ralf Denk, manager of Bora-Hansgrohe, stressed Schachmann's long-term potential as a stage racer.

"I have always said that we have a long-term plan with Max. He fits us perfectly and I think he thinks the same way," Denk said.

"With his overall win in Paris-Nice, he has also established himself as a stage racer. How far he can grow on this road remains to be seen, but Max definitely has many other qualities. I look forward to helping him find his place in the sport over the next few years."

On Wednesday, Bora Hansgrohe also announced two-year contract extensions for Cesare Benedetti and Lucas Pestlberger.

Benedetti has been with the team since it was founded as NetApp in 2010 and was a stage winner at last year's Giro d'Italia. Pestlberger has been with the team since 2016 and won the opening stage of the Giro the following year. The Austrian has played a key role in the team's sprint train in recent seasons.

"Lucas is also a complete rider. He can support the sprint train on the flat and in the echelon. Denk described Benedetti as "a really strong pillar."
