Evenpoel maintains undefeated GC record in 2020 at Vuelta a Burgos

And the beating continues. Six months after his victories at the Vuelta a San Juan and the Volta ao Algarve, Remco Evenepoel (Detunink-Quick Step) continued his impressive 2020 stage race record at the Vuelta a Burgos on Saturday with his third win out of three.

There has been a lot of talk this week in Burgos about how cycling has restarted the "new normal" at a high level.

But no matter how much the racing backdrop changes--and it has never been more different this year--the competition side of things is evenpoel, as the young riders of the Detunink Quickstep have been going strong from Argentina to Portugal and now Spain this season. seems to be little problem for the

With each victory, expectations continue to rise for the 20-year-old Evenpoel, and a win in the high mountains of Burgos will likely lead to further speculation about what Evenpoel can accomplish in October's Giro d'Italia, his biggest goal for 2020.

But truth be told, there are still no tangible limits to Evenepoel's future potential. As Detunink Quickstep team manager Patrick Lefebvre said on Friday, "No matter what we ask of Remco, he always gives us a little more."

At the finish of the final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos, he took third place behind stage winner Ivan Sosa (Ineos) and eventual GC runner-up Mikel Landa (Bahrain McLaren).

"I didn't want to lose too much time," Evenepoel said after the race. It was a perfect day for me."

"I had to suffer, I had to fight hard, and the climb was harder than two days ago.

Evenpoel praised his team for their hard work, as he was the lone man on the final climb to protect his lead.

"I paid attention at the front all day, didn't risk a crash, and held my position," Evenpoel claimed.

"I think that's what you have to do in a GC team and we did a perfect job while it was my job to keep the lead and to keep the jersey.

Apart from his own GC win (his seventh of 2020), Dečuninck-Quick-Step also won the Vuelta a Burgos with Joan Almeida's third place on GC, two stage wins by Sam Bennett on stage 4 and Evenpoel himself on stage 3, and Evenpoel's impressive haul of young rider of the year awards.

There is no better omen for what Evenapoel can achieve from now on in the revised 2020 calendar.
