Dylan Groenewegen punished for crashing at Tour de Pollogne

The UCI announced Wednesday that it condemns the actions of Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma), who caused a high-speed crash in the final sprint of the first stage of the Tour de Pollogne.

The crash left six riders, including Dutch champion Fabio Jacobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step), in serious condition after being taken to a specialized hospital in Sosnowiec.

Due to the seriousness of the incident, the sport's international governing body requested that sanctions be imposed against Grunewegen and referred the matter immediately to the Disciplinary Committee.

"The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has issued a sanction against Dylan Groenewegen (Dečuninck-Quick Step) for causing a group crash at the end of the first stage of the Tour of Poland, driving Fabio Jacobsen (Dečuninck-Quick Step) into the barriers a few meters from the finish. Jumbo Wisma) and strongly condemns his dangerous actions," a statement from the UCI said.

Groenewegen was disqualified by the Commissaires' Committee and fined CHF 500.

"The UCI considers this conduct to be unacceptable and has referred the matter immediately to the Disciplinary Committee with a request that sanctions be imposed commensurate with the gravity of the facts," the press release stated.

"The Federation stands with the affected players wholeheartedly."

The accident occurred in the final stages of the first stage of the Tour de Pollogne as Groenewegen and Jacobsen were sprinting toward the finish line in Katowice. Video footage shows Groenewegen deviating from the line to the right and Jacobsen crashing through the roadside barrier.

Groenewegen barely crossed the line first while losing control of his bike and crashed after the line. Half a dozen riders also crashed, including Marc Sarrault (Groupama-FDJ), Jasper Philippsen (UAE Team Emirates), Damien Touze (Cofidis), and Eduardo Prades (Movistar).

Jacobsen was immediately treated by medical services at the scene and later transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Salo damaged ligaments in his shoulder in the incident, and the team announced that he would not continue racing.

Jumbo Visma issued a statement after the crash apologizing for the accident and confirming that the issue would be addressed internally before issuing any further statements.

"My deepest sympathies go out to Fabio Jacobsen and everyone else involved in today's terrible accident at the Tour of Poland. Such an accident should never have happened," Jumbo-Visma announced on its social media channels.

"We offer our sincerest apologies and will review internally what happened before issuing any further statements.
