Tour de Pollogne organizers give Jacobsen 'the worst' after stage 1 crash

Tour de Pollogne race organizers issued a statement after the horrific crash that occurred in the final sprint of the first stage.

Race director Cheslav Lang feared the worst for Jacobsen, who was in a medically induced coma, but Lang, who visited the Santa Barbara Hospital in Sosnowiec, said he was relieved to learn that Jacobsen's condition had stabilized.

"We have been following the situation from the beginning," Lang said in a statement released by Tour de Pollogne organizers. 'I just got back from the Sosnowiec Santa Barbara Hospital. I spoke with the director of the hospital and am a little relieved. After seeing the crash, I feared the worst, but now I know that the situation is serious but stable."

The crash happened in the last few meters of the first stage when Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo Visma) and Jacobsen were sprinting for the finish in Katowice. Video footage shows Groenewegen deviating from the line to the right and Jacobsen breaking through the roadside barrier.

Groenewegen was the first to cross the line, but lost control of his bike and crashed just after the finish. Half a dozen riders went down in the accident, including Marc Sarrault (Groupama-FDJ), Yasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates), Damien Tooze (Cofidis), and Eduardo Prades (Movistar).

"The first stage of the Tour de Pollogne was interrupted by a serious high-speed crash. Dylan Groenewegen and Fabio Jacobsen were battling for the win in the last 150 meters when a Jumbo Visma rider went off line and the Dečuninck-Quick Step sprinter crashed. Race organizers said in a statement that "a number of riders in the lead were involved in the accident."

The race's medical service immediately treated Jacobsen locally, after which he was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition and placed in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Sosnowiec.Deceuninck-QuickStep also said that Jacobsen's condition is serious but medical update confirming that Jacobsen's condition is serious but stable.

A course-side official also suffered the impact of the crash and was taken to the hospital. Lang confirmed that this official sustained a head injury and is now in stable condition.

The UCI issued a statement after the accident condemning Groenewegen's actions. Due to the seriousness of the accident, the UCI, the sport's international governing body, requested that Groenewegen be sanctioned and immediately referred the matter to the Disciplinary Committee

The Commissaires Committee of the Tour de Pollogne disqualified Groenewegen and fined him CHF 500.

"The UCI found Dylan Groenewegen's actions unacceptable and disqualified the Jumbo-Visma rider and handed the stage win to Fabio Jacobsen," the race organizers announced.
