The Tour de Pollogne took an unusual turn on Thursday when the CCC team refused to accept the race leader's jersey after a crash on the first stage caused all of the top finishers to fall off the bike.
Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo Visma), who finished first, was disqualified. Fabio Jacobsen of Dečuninck-Quick Step collided with Groenewegen just before the finish line and crashed hard.
Marc Sarrault (Groupama-FDJ) hit a barricade that was ripped off by Jacobsen's crash, and he exited the race with a torn shoulder ligament.
He gained 6 seconds of bonus time, putting him 2 seconds ahead of Luca Medjeck (Mitchelton-Scott).
The CCC team tried to give the yellow jersey to Dečuninck-Quickstep, but the rules forbid them to give the yellow jersey to Dečuninck-Quickstep.
"The CCC team was informed last night by the race organizers of the Tour de Pollogne that Camille Malecki would be the race leader for the second stage after the terrible crash in which Fabio Jacobsen was involved.
"Given the circumstances, and out of respect for Fabio and Marc Sarrault, who was also injured in the crash, both the team and Camille felt that it would not be appropriate for Camille to wear the leader's jersey and instead requested that the stage 2 jersey be given to Detuninck-Quickstep The team and Camil both felt that it was not appropriate for Camil to wear the leader's jersey. However, this was not possible due to race regulations.
"Our thoughts are with Fabio, his family, friends, and the entire Dečuninck-Quickstep team, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
