Milan-San Remo is always a long day, but the 2020 Monument has been lengthened by 6 km to avoid Alessandria. Race organizer RCS Sport said, "Due to the severe thunderstorms that have hit Alessandria over the past few days, we have had to change the route. Accordingly, the route will be extended by 6 km"
.
At 305 km, the race will be the longest of the 111 Milan-San Remo races held.
Normally, after leaving Milan, the route heads south, crossing the Passo del Turchino before heading along the Ligurian coast from Genoa. However, the mayors of the 12 towns along the Italian Riviera coast on the route refused to close the road during the peak tourist season.
As a result, the initial Milan-San Remo route was changed and the course extended to 299 km with an additional 10 km neutral ride from central Milan.
The latest changes added a 6 km detour to avoid Alessandria and added a neutral 10 km from Milan, bringing the total distance to 305 km.
UCI rules set the maximum race distance for elite men at 280 km for Olympic and World Championships, 240 km for Continental and National Championships, and 200 km for 1. Pro, 1.1, and 1.2 ranked races, but the decision on distances for World Tour races is Pro Cycling Council.
The organizers of Milan-San Remo have already received an exception to reduce the number of teams to six in order to add two Italian Pro Continental teams (Androni Giocattoli Sidermec and Bardiani CSF Faizane).
The weather is expected to be much better than in previous years' March races, with sunny skies and temperatures forecast at 30°C. There will be two refueling zones, one after 102 km and the other after 192 km.
