Evenpoel and van Avermaet lead Belgium's squad for European Championships

Remco Evenpole (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Greg Van Avermaert (CCC Team), and Victor Campenaerts (NTT Pro Cycling) will lead the Belgian team for the 2020 European Road Championships. The championships will be held in Plouay, France, just before the start of the Tour de France.

Evenpoel, who won four stage races this year with his time trial ability and long-distance solo attacks, will defend his title with 2018 European champion Campenaerts in the individual time trial on August 24. Evenpoel will not compete in the road race.

Juan Avermaat will lead the Belgian team in the road race on August 26. He will concentrate on supporting his Jumbo-Visma teammates Primoz Roglic, Steven Kruijswijk, and Tom Dumoulin in the Tour de France.

Also on the Belgian national team in Plouay are Xandro Moulis (Circus-Wanty Gobert), Oliver Naessen (AG2R La Mondiale), Yasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates), and Yasper Steiven (Trek-Segafredo), Sepp Vanmarcke (EF Pro Cycling), and Otto Felgaerde (Alpecin Phoenix).

The women's road race will take place on August 28, and three riders from Lotto Soudal will represent Belgium: Lotte Kopecky, Jessie Vandenbroucke, and Julie Van de Velde. Lotte Kopecky, Jesse Vandenbroucke, and Julie Van de Velde will represent Lotto Soudal. Van de Velde and Sarah Van de Vel (Cyclotel) will compete in the time trial.

The women's elite individual time trial will take place on August 24, while the World Tour Bretagne Classic and the women's World Tour Plouët GP will be held on August 25.

The Under 23 women's and elite men's road race will take place on August 26, the U23 men's and elite women's road race on August 27, and the junior men's and women's road race on August 28, with a mixed team time trial relay.

The UEC Road Championships were originally scheduled to take place in Trentino, Italy from September 9-13, but were moved to Plouai after the entire season was postponed from March to July due to a coronavirus pandemic-related cancellation.
