After a successful restart of the season with Strade Bianche, Milan - Torino, and Milan - Sanremo, the Italian race season opens on Wednesday with Gran Piemonte (opens in new tab).

The race has a varied start list, led by Mathieu Van der Pol (open in new tab) (Alpecin Phoenix).

Cycling News will provide complete live coverage, reports, results, news, and analysis before, during, and after the Gran Piemonte; click here to see how to watch the race via live stream using ExpressVPN (opens in new tab).

While his win in the 2019 Amstel Gold Race is proof that he can certainly grab a win here, Van der Pol has not looked his dominant best at all since the restart.

He will face a wealth of climbing talent and interesting prospects in this race, led by 2015 Vuelta a España winner Fabio Aru (opens in new tab) (UAE Team Emirates). He will be joined by teammates Diego Ulissi and Valerio Conti.

Vincenzo Nibali (open in new tab) (Trek-Segafredo) will be a late call-up and will be joined by Giulio Ciccone. Other competitors include Alessandro De Marchi (CCC Team) and Giovanni Visconti (Vini Zabu-KTM) from Piemonte.

Alexandre Vlasov (open in new tab) (Astana), who is in good form after winning the Mont Ventoux-Denivelle Challenge last week, is another one to watch. Teammate Ion Izaguirre is also available.

George Bennett (open in new tab) (Jumbo Visma), Ben King (NTT Pro Cycling), and Israeli Startup Nation duo Ben Hermans (open in new tab) and James Piccoli also deserve attention.

The Gran Piemonte has changed significantly over the years, with the varied terrain in the northwest providing opportunities for all types of riders.

The 2019 race (open in new tab) brings a mostly flat day before a summit finish in Oropa, while the 2016 and 2018 events were sprinter-friendly. Prior to that, the race favored punchers and sprinters as the route was chopped and changed.

This time around, 13 major hills filled the parcours, with few flat roads all the way to the finish atop the hills of the wine region of Barolo.
