Richie Porte (open in new tab) (Trek Segafed) will be looking for GC in the Criterium du Dauphiné (open in new tab) after a strong showing in the Tour de l'Ain (open in new tab).
Jumbo-Visma and Team Ineos will head into the five-day race with a strong team that includes five Grand Tour winners: Primoz Roglic, Tom Dumoulin, Chris Froome, Egan Bernal, and Geraint Thomas.
Every stage of the race will conclude with a climb or summit finish, and Porte enters the race in pretty good shape. He finished second in the Mont Ventoux Challenge and sixth overall in La Route d'Occitanie. Unsteady in the Tour de l'Ain, he finished strongly in fifth place in the final mountain stage.
"We've raced hard going into the race," Porte said on the eve of the Dauphiné.
"It wasn't easy, it was hot, but I think the Dauphiné is always a motivating race. Of course I want to get a good result."
Porte's record in this race is formidable, with one stage win and two second places overall. Last year he finished 11th on GC, a result that came after an injury- and illness-plagued spring campaign.
"A second stage finish at the Col de Porte, it would be kind of cool to do something," he said of the second stage and the race's first summit finish.
"When you look at the start list, it's absolutely jam-packed with talent. It's like the Tour de France. It makes sense. This year we don't have the Tour de Suisse, so everyone is here. It will be a good indication of where everyone is at."
"Obviously GC is the goal, but we're going to go stage by stage. All the riders here are motivated to have a good race.
Porte will line up with a strong Trek-Segafredo team that includes Niklas Egg, Kenny Elissonde, and veteran climber Pieter Weening.
Porte, an Australian, will race in Italy this week and co-lead the American team at the Tour de France with Bauke Mollema, who will defend his 2019 victory at Il Lombardia.
