Huge hailstorm hits riders and spectators at the Criterium du Dauphiné

The finish line of the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphiné (open in new tab) was hit by a brutal hailstorm Thursday afternoon.

Primoš Roglic (Open in new tab) (Jumbo Visma) has long since claimed the stage win and overall lead, but even the Slovenian was affected by the storm, forcing his wife and young child to take refuge in the car of cycling news reporter Peter Kocins.

Meanwhile, the podium ceremony was cut short when the inflatable roof collapsed shortly after Egan Bernal (open in new tab) (Team Ineos) was awarded the white jersey for best young rider.

Deceuninck-QuickStep domestique Tim Declercq (opens in new tab) posted a photo on Instagram of a severe back injury from a hailstorm, and B&B Hotels-Vital Concept neo-pro Maxime Chevalier suffered similar injuries.

Others caught in the storm while riding included Tony Martin (Jumbo-Visma) and Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana), who took shelter under a rubber raft of fans, and Jerome Cousin (Total Direct Energy), who finished 14 minutes after the time limit.

A video shot by Groupama-FDJ director Sportif shows the riders climbing through the heavy hail. The video shows 22 athletes, including Peter Sagan (open in new tab) (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Alexander Kristof (UAE Team Emirates), passing before Dan Martin (Israel Startup Nation) passes, nearly stops, then leaves again The video shows the scene.
