Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) will miss Saturday's Il Lombardia due to a hand injury sustained last weekend in Milan-San Remo.
Matthews finished third in Sanremo, but just as he was about to attack, he scraped the wall near the top of Poggio, causing his hand to bleed.
Despite this, he was able to complete the descent and win the group sprint in third place behind Wout Van Aert and Julien Alaphilippe.
Matthews' hand had not recovered to the point where he could properly control his bike, so Team Sunweb made the decision not to enter him in Il Lombardia.
"The situation is moving in the right direction, but it will still take time for his hand to recover. 'He still hasn't regained full movement. That means he can't steer or brake efficiently," said team doctor Kamiel Aldershov.
"He needs about 10 more days for the wounds to heal, and then he will be able to return to work," said team doctor Kamiel Aldershov.
Matthews has competed in Il Lombardia three times, but has never completed the Italian monument, which is usually held in the fall.
He will be replaced in the Sunweb lineup by Martin Tusfeldt, while Wilco Kelderman will lead the team on Saturday. Completing the Sunweb lineup are Chad Haga, Jai Hindley, Chris Hamilton, Nico Denz, and Florian Storck.
"Wilco, who finished seventh in GC at the Tour de Pollogne, is in good form, and we have several options to get results in the race with a strong team," said sport director Luke Roberts.
"Normally this is a very hard race, but this year it will be even harder with the schedule change. Not only will the racers have to contend with a difficult course, but the high temperatures expected will make the race even tougher. We are looking forward to it and are really motivated to make it a unique edition of Il Lombardia."
In the restructured 2020 calendar, Matthews' season is built around the Giro d'Italia in October.
Milan-San Remo was his major early goal, but he was forced to settle for a second podium finish.
"In the second part of Poggio, I wanted to attack. There were a couple of guys in front of me attacking and I wanted to go too. But the door closed in front of me and I hit the wall. I scraped my hand and shoulder against the wall," Matthews said of the incident in San Remo. [But] I didn't want to give up because the team did a great job. It was all or nothing in the sprint, what I could get after that incident."
Matthew gave an update on his injury from his home in Monaco. He is aiming to return to racing at the World Tour race "Bretagne Classic - Ouest France" in France on August 25.
