Tom Dumoulin said that despite Primoš Roglic showing a higher level as an individual than the rest of the field and the Dutch team dominating their rivals as a group in the recent Tour de Ain and Critérium du Dauphiné, Jumbo Visma is in the Tour de France. He said he needs to adapt and take more skillful tactics.
"This tactic of leading the pack and having each one of us set the pace one after the other is fine for this race, where Primozh is only focused on winning, but it won't work in the Tour, where the level of the other riders is higher. After the third stage of the Dauphiné, Dumoulin said, "We need different tactics in the Tour."
Dumoulin, the 2017 Giro d'Italia winner and 2018 Tour runner-up, said he is on the upswing but still needs more consistency. He said, "Yesterday was a good day, but I had to change bikes at the end of the climb. Today I was a bit underpowered, but I rode well, so that's not a problem. But I need to improve before the Tour."
He added that the team needs to take more advantage of its three leaders. Ahead of the Tour, Dumoulin admitted that it was too early to say that Roglic would be Jumbo's leader.
"It is not premature to say that. I think [Jumbo Visma's] leader is Primoz, and [Egan] Bernal is the leader of Ineos. I hope me and Stevie (Kruijswijk) improve, and I hope G (Geraint Thomas) and Fruimy don't."
"The 'shadow' leaders may approach the level of Primoz and Bernal at the Tour. But from what I've seen so far, Primoz is by far the strongest. They are very strong as a team."
