Bora-Hansgrohe sport director Enrico Poischke has confirmed that Emmanuel Buchmann did not suffer any broken bones after he crashed out of the Criterium du Dauphiné in the same accident that sidelined Jumbo-Visma's Steven Kruijswijk.
However, the coach acknowledged that the many cuts and abrasions suffered by Buchmann, who finished fourth in last year's Tour de France, could prevent him from competing in this year's race, which opens in Nice on August 29.
"He was still in bad shape this morning and had a hard time getting out of bed. After a few minutes he was better and able to walk. Yesterday he couldn't do that."
"The good news is that nothing is broken. But we don't know what he'll be like in a few days or how soon he'll be back on the bike. There is still a big question mark over whether he will be able to compete in the Tour de France."
Poitske said Buchmann and his Beulah-Hansgrohe teammate were in perfect position on the tricky Col de Plan Bois descent.
"We didn't take any risks and the crash was unfortunate. We can't change anything. Now we have to focus on the future. We all hope to recover and come back, but it's out of our hands," he explained.
Asked for his reaction to Max Schachmann's crash at the Il Lombardia finale when his car entered the race route, Poytzke replied: "Yeah, it was bad luck again. I mean, a car ran into me near the finish of the World Tour race. What can I say: ....... And my collarbone is broken."
"It's a huge disappointment for him and for the team. But we still don't know if he's going to be able to compete in the Tour. He's still very motivated and I hope he'll be able to race, but it's hard to get back to the highest level. I hope he can start because the Tour de France is important for him and for the team."
