Rui Costa of UAE Team Emirates was crowned Portugal's road race champion on Sunday, holding off Daniel Mestre of W52/FC Porto in Gandora. It was Costa's second national road race title, having also won in 2015.The 33-year-old Costa is also a two-time national time trial champion, in 2010 and 2013, and in 2013 he won in Florence, Italy, ahead of Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez and was also crowned world road race champion in Florence, Italy in 2013, beating out Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez.
Mestre's W52/FC Porto teammate Francisco Campos rounded out the podium in third place, 28 seconds behind.
"It was a very special victory. Rui and Ivo Oliveira rode hard for me today, both of them worked hard up front and made the right moves when I needed them," Costa said in a UAE Team Emirates press release, praising his two young teammates.
"It's complicated to win here in Portugal when you are up against a team with a lot of people. We attacked really hard on the last kick, and we had a lot of chances to win."
"This weekend was a great success for the team. Ivo won the TT [national time title] and I won the road race. It doesn't get any better than that," Costa said.
Meanwhile, former Gazprom Rusvelo rider Sergey Shirov, now with Portugal's Continental team Avildo Lletano, won the Russian road race in Samara on Sunday in a breakaway that also finished second behind Astana's Alexandre Vlasov in last year's race. Nikita Martynov, 20, took third place by 1:39 ahead of Igor Frolov.
Vlasov was absent to defend his title after finishing third behind Astana teammate Jacob Fuglsang on Saturday at Il Lombardia.
This weekend, a week before the Tour de France takes place, is typically the weekend for road race championships in Europe. However, other national championships, including the British and Dutch road race championships, have either been canceled or postponed until further notice due to coronavirus restrictions.
