Just 48 hours after his horrific crash at Il Lombardia, Lemko Evenpoel posted a video message thanking his supporters and vowing to come back stronger than ever after suffering a season-ending pelvic fracture.
The 20-year-old Dečuninck-Quick Step rider apparently misjudged a sharp left turn into a bridge on Saturday's descent of Solmano, one of the steepest and most technical descents on the World Tour. He hit a low stone wall and fell off the cliff into a ravine, but fortunately landed on a steeper drop-off.
On Tuesday, the Detunink Quickstep team confirmed that Evenpoel's pelvic fracture was "conservatively treated" and did not require surgery.
"He is feeling very well at the moment. The transfer to a Belgian hospital went well.
"First of all, I want to thank all the people who have supported and helped me from the moment of the crash until now. Unfortunately, my season is over so far. I have plenty of time to plan a good comeback, physical and otherwise.
"I want to thank my fans for their support. There were too many messages and I couldn't answer them all. I see everything and feel everything. I know that your support touches my heart and helps me in a positive way. Me and my team are thinking positive and looking forward to next season. I will really slow down, calm down, and do my best to become a better rider and stronger than ever"
.
Evenapoel won all four stage races he started this year, starting with the Vuelta a San Juan in January and the Volta ao Algarve in February, his second season in the WorldTour with Dečuninck-Quick Step.
In March, he won the Vuelta a Burgos and the Tour de Pollogne despite a race interruption due to a coronavirus outbreak.
