Italian authorities fined a woman €129 and two points off her driver's license after she drove her car onto the track at Saturday's Il Lombardia finale, cut off German champion Maximilian Schachmann, and ran into the side of her car, breaking her collarbone. ...
Investigators reconstructed the incident and found that the driver came out of one of the private roads down San Fermo della Battaglia, "out of sight" of the police who were at the nearest protection point. She turned right, traveled about 200 meters on the track to Cernobbio, and then turned left into the path of Schachmann, who was in seventh place.
Schachmann finished the race, but later tests revealed that she had broken her collarbone in a collision with a car.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, "I didn't know there was a race," the woman said.
She was fined for "driving on a closed section, in violation of an order," and for "turning left without making sure she could do so safely."
The driver may face further sanctions because the accident resulted in injuries.Schachmann wrote on Twitter, "Unfortunately my collarbone was broken, but I'm glad it was only a collarbone 'only' in the end. There are moments in life when you can't get lucky with your own hands. Today was no different. ......"
The UCI announced that it would launch an investigation against race organizer RCS Sports for allowing the driver to enter the track.
Race director Mauro Veni told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "The UCI can investigate if it wants to. We only read the press release, we have not been contacted [by them].
"We are doing our utmost to ensure safety. 'There are thousands of access points along the 230-km route. (Caution) If we find a tape, we stop. But for now, everything should be verified and we will leave it to the investigators to look into it."
"We are very sorry about this, but we also recognize that it is complicated. It is impossible not to know about Lombardy. The municipality of Como published the race route everywhere and we are doing more than that."
Early in the race, Deceuninck-Quick Step star rider Lemko Evenpoel lost control on the Solmano descent and crashed into a ravine in a corner. Lemko suffered a fractured pelvis and was taken to Herentals, Belgium.
