Lilian Calmejane will move to AG2R La Mondiale next year.
Calmejane is headed in the opposite direction of Pierre Latour and Alexandre Jenyes, coming and going before the 2021 season when AG2R will become the AG2R Citroën team.
The 27-year-old Carméjane has spent the past five years with Jean-Rene Bernadeau's team (formerly Europcar) after graduating from the Vendée U feeder team. He won stages at the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, but felt it was time for something new.
"I have a very strong bond with Vendée U and Jean-Renée Bernadeau's team, and they have helped me become a professional. Still, after being on the same team for five years, I felt the need for new challenges. I want to discover new teammates, new equipment, new races, and also win my place," said Kareem Jane.
"I'm really happy to start at AG2R La Mondiale. Not only do they have players my age, but also promising young players. I know that the team enjoys a great dynamism and I am really looking forward to this new challenge."
Calmejane is one of a number of new faces joining AG2R for 2021, including Greg Van Avermaert, Mickael Scherr, and Gijs Van Hoekke from the CCC team, Stan DeWolf from Lot Soudal, Groupama-FDJ Marc Sarrault and Damien Touze will join from Cofidis. In addition to Latour and Jénye, Grand Tour leader Romain Bardet has signed with Sunweb.
Most of the recruits so far have been concentrated in the Classics division, but Carméjane, who ran the cobbled Classics last year, is an all-rounder. He has won the Etoile des Besseges, Settimana Coppi et Bartali, and Sarthe Circuit stage races, as well as the one-day Paris-Camembert, both the Ardèche and Drome classics, and two Grand Tour stages.
His Tour de France victory came from a breakaway in the intermediate mountains as part of a seven-win 2017 campaign.
"Lilian has already shown all his potential by winning the Tour de France as well as the Vuelta. He has a strong character and can win at a high level," said AG2R manager Vincent Lavene. He will start a new challenge with the AG2R Citroën team on January 1. We are sure that he will show his talent to the fullest in races wearing our colors."
