Sunweb Extends Contracts with Arndt and Stokes

Team Sunweb has signed both Nikias Arndt and Florian Storck to two-year contract extensions that will keep them with the German WorldTour team at least through the end of the 2022 season.

Arndt, 28, has been with the team for eight years and has developed into something of a road captain for Sunweb, but he still has plenty of opportunities to ride himself, including winning the shortened bunch sprint on stage 8 of the 2019 Vuelta a EspaƱa. For Australian fans, his 2017 win at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is also fresh in their minds.

"Since joining the team in 2013, I've really found a home here," Arndt said in a press release Monday. 'I like the way the team works and we have a similar mindset, so it's a great fit.'

"I've enjoyed moving into the role of road captain and sharing my experience with the younger players. I think I can still grow as a rider with Team Sunweb."

The 23-year-old Stokes, who just made the step up from Sunweb's development team to the WorldTour team at the start of the 2019 season, has already found his footing as an all-rounder ready to help the team on any terrain.

"I'm really looking forward to being on the team for two more years," Stokes said. "It's nice to know that the team trusts me during this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic. I personally feel it's the right environment for me to progress further, and I think I have a lot to offer the team at this stage of my career."

"In the coming years I hope to gain more experience with the team, continue to improve overall as a rider, and make further progress in the climbs and time trials.

Commenting on the contract extensions of the two German riders, Sunweb director Rudi Kemna said: "Nikias has been a member of the team for a long time. Nikias has been a member of the team for a long time and knows how we work. Nikias excels in the role of road captain, and with his years of experience, we can count on him to pass on his knowledge and help train the young riders who will be coming in.

"We are delighted that Florian will be working with us for two more years," said Chemna. He's a really versatile rider. He is solid in the lead-out and can support the GC riders well on the climbs. We hope to develop him into a road captain in the future.
