Bob Jungels will move from Detunink-Quick Step to AG2R La Mondiale at the start of next year. AG2R La Mondiale, which has already signed Greg Van Avermaat for the Classics, expects Jungels to combine his one-day pedigree with Grand Tour potential.
AG2R La Mondiale is in the midst of a major turnover of high-profile riders with the departure of Romain Bardet and Pierre Latour.
Jungels has spent the past five years with Patrick Lefebvre's team, taking several high-profile victories, including Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Coone-Brussels-Coone. Although his Grand Tour results have been lackluster in recent years, the 27-year-old rider from Luxembourg finished sixth overall in the 2016 Giro d'Italia.
"My first contact with Vincent Lavenu dates back to before his professional career began, and I am delighted to be joining the AG2R Citroën team on January 1," Jungels said in a team press release.
"I was able to immediately embrace the team's project, especially everything that is in place in terms of performance as well as equipment. With riders like Oliver Naessen and Greg Van Avermaet, the team is very ambitious in the classics and being part of this group is very motivating.
"And of course we are also looking at stage races. I want to achieve great results, first in a one-week race and then in the three-week Grand Tours.
AG2R La Mondiale team manager Vincent Lavene said they have tried to sign Jungels in the past, adding that he would be the team leader in the classics and stage races.
"I have watched Bob's career since his amateur days. We have tried to sign him in the past, and I am happy that he will be joining the AG2R Citroën team on January 1. He's won the Liège - Bastogne - Liège, as well as other cobbled competitions like the Cune - Brussels - Cune."
"He will be one of the team leaders not only in the classics but also in the stage races. Bob has already finished in the top 10 twice in the Giro d'Italia (6th in 2016 and 8th in 2017), so he will assist him with his experience in this field and the young climbers will support him."
