While the new road to the summit of the Col de la Rose will be the focus of cycling on stage 17 of the Tour de France in four weeks, new colors and a new brand for Team Ineos, including Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, and, according to French media, Egan Bernal, were announced on Tuesday
The same seven-member Team Ineos team from the recent Criterium du Dauphiné, including Froome, Thomas, and Tour champion Bernal, who retired from the Dauphiné with back pain, were spotted training in the Savoie department on roads that will be part of this year's Tour.
The French newspaper Le Dauphiné (opens in new tab) reported Bernal's participation with a photo posted on social media by Thierry Caroz showing the team's trademark burgundy color remaining on his helmet and a very dark blue Castelli new kit was shown being worn. The front of the jersey featured Grenadier's name and the red A logo, while the legs of the shorts bore Ineos' name.
The British WorldTour team announced in July that it would change its team name to Ineos Grenadier in time for the start of the Tour de France on August 29. Ineos, a U.K.-based petrochemical company, has launched Ineos Automotive and plans to unveil the industry's first vehicle, a 4x4 vehicle called Grenadier, next year.
Bernal is expected to be part of the Ineos Grenadier lineup at the Tour de France, but his role as leader is yet to be determined. The last major stage race was tough for them: Bernal retired from the Dauphiné before the final stage with a back injury, Thomas was 37th overall after five days, and Froome was 71st, 1 hour 26 minutes behind winner EF Pro Cycling's Dani Martinez.
UCI regulations allow a team to change its name and team colors once per season. Team Ineos has changed its kit during its Team Sky days; at the 2018 Tour de France, it wore a special design with a whale on its back to support Sky's Ocean Rescue campaign, and changed sponsors midway through the 2019 season When the team changed its sponsor, it changed its team name to Ineos.
