Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas dropped from Ineos Tour de France team

Team Ineos has announced its team for the Tour de France.

Instead, Froome has been named team leader for the Vuelta a España and Thomas for the Giro d'Italia.

In another surprise, 2019 Giro d'Italia winner Richard Kalapas has been called up to the Tour de France squad to back up Bernal, who was named team leader by team manager Dave Brailsford. Kalapas crashed at the recent Tour de Pollogne, but recent tests and checks have shown that he is in good shape.

"Egan will again be aiming for the yellow jersey in France. We are very excited to have last year's Giro winner, Richard Karapas, making his debut at this year's Tour as well," said Brailsford, who announced his selection decision Wednesday morning.

"Gelant will be targeting the Giro and the opportunity to double his Tour de France victory and Grand Tour title, becoming the first Welshman to win a Grand Tour.

"And Chris Froome will be targeting the Vuelta. Chris is a legend of the sport and a true champion who has come back from last year's crash with incredible grit and determination. We want to help him win another Grand Tour title and the Vuelta will give him time to continue his progression to the top level.

"We are proud to have several current and future Grand Tour champions on our team. Choosing the right leader in the right race with the right support team is very important and we needed to analyze all the latest information to optimize our performance in the coming months."

Team Ineos is called "Ineos Grenadiers" in the Tour de France, with a newly designed kit to promote the new 4x4 SUV vehicle recently launched by Ineos Automotive.

They have identified eight riders who will participate in the Tour:

Andrei Amador Egan Bernal Richard Carapaz Jonathan Castroviejo Michal Kwiatkowski Luke Lowe Pavel Sivakov Dylan Van Baarle

"We have analyzed closely how we can win the Tour de France this year, and we are very happy with the results.

Bernal said he likes the balance of the Tour de France team.

"I'm really looking forward to competing with this team at the Tour de France," Bernal said from the Alps. He is in final training after missing the Criterium du Dauphiné to avoid aggravating a back problem.

"I think it's a young team, Pavel [Sivakov], Richard [Calapas] and me. But I'm going to enjoy it. It's a young team, but with the experience of other riders like Kwiat [Michal Kwiatkowski], Luke Rowe, and Castro [Jonathan Castroviejo], it's a good balance. I'm really happy to be part of the Tour team. I want to do my best for the team and the team as a whole."

Bernal suggested that Thomas could be active in the Giro d'Italia and could support Froome at the Vuelta a España after the Tour de France.

"It's a little strange not having G [Geraint Thomas] and Froome [Chris Froome] at the Tour, but I'm looking forward to seeing what G can do in the Giro.

"I think the Giro with the three time trials is a good Giro for him. He'll make time there and then defend in the big mountains."

"Maybe he can go to the Vuelta to help Flemmi. Right now I have to concentrate on the Tour, but I don't have any plans after the Tour yet.
