Simon Yates Extends Contract with Mitchelton Scott

Simon Yates (open in new tab) has extended his contract with Mitchelton-Scott (open in new tab), with the 2018 Vuelta a España winner deciding to stay with the team he turned pro for two more years.

Mitchelton-Scott announced the news on Wednesday, but despite being offered a contract to remain with Mitchelton-Scott, Simon's twin brother Adam Yates, who is strongly rumored to move to Team Ineos (open in new tab) in 2021 (open in new tab), there was no news on his future.

The future of the Australian team was uncertain earlier this year due to failed takeover talks with Spain-based Manuela Foundacion.

The team took severe pay cuts, and after negotiations with Manuela Foundacion broke down in public, team owner Jerry Ryan stepped in and announced that he would continue to fund the team for the next two years and restore player salaries to their original levels.

This continuity and stability was key to Simon Yates staying with the team for two more seasons.

"The journey with the team has been great so far.

"The journey with the team has been amazing so far. I've grown and matured as a person and as a rider.

"The team knows me as a rider and how I work and I'm very comfortable in this environment. The team needs that. Two or three weeks before a Grand Tour, not only me but the whole team is stressed and tired.

"We have had a lot of success together, we won our first Grand Tour two years ago and I believe we can win again.

Yates will once again lead the pack at the Giro d'Italia. For Ryan, keeping Yates on the team is an important sign of the relationship between rider and team.

"We are very happy that Simon will be with us in the future. It is a relationship that has been built over a long period of time and we believe it has the potential for even greater success in the future."

." Simon has provided some of the proudest moments for our organization, including our first Grand Tour win." "We are confident that together we have many highlights to accomplish.

Two years ago, Mitchelton Scott announced that the Yates brothers had re-signed at the same time; they both joined the team at the same time in 2014 and have different programs and racing styles, but the news that only Simon had re-signed was a sign that Adam would be moving to Ineos next year would only raise the suspicion that Adam will move to Ineos next year.

Adam Yates, who will lead the Australian team in the Tour de France, has received contract offers from both teams, as Cycling News reported earlier this summer.

Mitchelton-Scott has already lost Darryl Impey and Edoardo Alfini to other teams, so losing Adam Yates would be a blow to the WorldTour team that has nurtured his career for the past six years.
