Tanel Kangat (open in new tab) has signed a two-year contract with Australia's Mitchelton Scott (open in new tab) and will join Mitchelton Scott in 2021. The Estonian has spent the past two seasons with EF Pro Cycling (open in new tab) and prior to that spent eight years with Astana as one of Vincenzo Nibali's most trusted domestiques.
"The team contacted me a few years ago, but before I knew it, I had moved away.
"It's easy to focus and have big goals because it's professional and fun at the same time."
Canguer raced as an amateur in France before turning pro in 2008 with AG2R La Mondiale; after a year away from the pros in 2010, he returned to the World Tour in 2011 with Astana, where he spent eight seasons.
A stage winner at the 2012 Tour de Suisse and overall winner at the 2016 Abu Dhabi Tour, Kangert finished in the top 20 at all three Grand Tours during his time with Astana, but primarily made his name as a deluxe domestique.
Cangert led Vincenzo Nibali (open in new tab) to victory in the 2014 Tour de France and played a key role in Astana's offensive in the final stages to Sant'Anna di Vinadio in the 2013 and 2016 Giro d'Italia.
In 2019, Kangert led EF Pro Cycling's Rigoberto UrĂ¡n to seventh overall in the Tour.
The 33-year-old will replace Simon Yates, who signed a contract extension with Mitchelton-Scott earlier this week, in a similar support role. [He will ride as a support rider in the Grand Tours and himself in the weekday races to get results.
"I really enjoy the Grand Tours. I'm not the best climber or time trial specialist, but I can do them all.
"To be a good domestique you have to be a team player. In my case, I am not interested in finishing the stage in sixth, fifth, or fourth, as long as the team leader knows he can win. It is not a sacrifice for me. If there is a leader, it is because he is strong and I am always willing to run for it."
Mitchelton Scott sport director Matt White welcomed the arrival of the rider, whom he described as "a no-frills guy who just gets the job done," adding that the Estonian is "very reliable under pressure."
White continued. "He was on the team that won the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia when he was rolled by Vincenzo Nibali on the final stage of the 2016 Giro. He went up the road and waited for Nibali and rode for several kilometers to help Nibali gain a precious few seconds on Esteban."
