Sam Umen (open in new tab) has signed a three-year contract with Jumbo Visma (open in new tab), ending his time with Team Sunweb (open in new tab).
The 25-year-old began his career with Team Sunweb and signed at the start of 2016. He has competed twice in the Giro d'Italia and once in the Vuelta a EspaƱa, and finished in the top 10 in his first Giro in 2018.
However, he has been plagued by persistent injuries for the last 18 months and raced only 31 days in 2019. Last June, a problem with his iliac artery required surgery, ending his season.
Earlier this year, when rumors of a move to Jumbo Visma surfaced, Sunweb began telling the media that it would not offer the player a contract extension with the team, and the move became official on Tuesday.
"My five years with Team Sunweb have been fun and good. Looking to the future, I feel that now is the right time to move on," Omen said in a press release issued by the team he is moving to.
"It is great to take a new step with Team Jumbo Visma. My knowledge, philosophy, love for the sport, and faith in this team convinced me that Team Jumbo-Visma is the right team for me. I am really looking forward to working in a new environment, with many new faces and old acquaintances. I'm really happy," Omen added.
Jumbo-Visma has seen Omen's growth firsthand during his time with the U3 Rabobank team.
The rider will follow the path established by Tom Dumoulin, who moved from Sunweb to Jumbo Visma at the end of 2019. The addition of Omen will also be covered after Lawrence de Plus signs with Team Ineos - although this transfer has not yet been officially announced.
"Sam is the youngest stage racing talent in the Netherlands. 'We have followed him with great interest over the years. We are very happy that he has chosen us."
"We are convinced that with the right guidance Sam can get even better. We hope to gradually lead him to the top of the world."
