EF Pro Cycling has announced its team for the 2020 Tour de France, naming two American riders and three first-time entrants.
According to a press release, the team will bring "a strong group with ambitions for the overall classification and riders who are resourceful in seeing the stages as the race dictates." We have the right balance of experience and opportunity. We are well prepared."
Leading the veterans will be Colombian Rigoberto Urán, who finished second to Chris Froome in the 2017 Tour de France and twice finished second in the Giro d'Italia. Uran was severely injured in a crash at last year's Vuelta a España, which forced him to take a three-month break, but he says he is highly motivated for this year's race.
"I am really happy to be a member of the Tour de France. Especially when I have been on the podium before," said Wran. You always want to do your best, get good results, and be on par with the best."
At his side are two Colombians in the running for GC leader: Sergio Iguita, who finished third in Paris-Nice and won this year's Tour Colombia 2.1, and Dani Martinez, who won the Criterium du Dauphiné.
"This will be my first Tour de France and I can honestly say I have never been more excited about a race. 'To compete in the Tour is a big goal for many cyclists and for me it's incredible to think that in a few days I will achieve the biggest goal of my life, which is to be on the start line. It's also even more special to be riding in the Colombian national champion jersey."
Martinez has competed in the Tour once in 2018 and is looking forward to returning. He said, "I absolutely love the Tour, it's one of the most beautiful races. There are some really great teams at a high level and to be a part of it alongside them is a really big deal for me."
[14The team also chose Hugh Carthy for his Tour debut. The Englishman said he is "nervous and excited all at the same time," while Nielson Powles, also a debutant, said he is "feeling excited and motivated."
"I finally got the chance to realize my dream and compete in the Tour de France. It feels super special to be competing in the Tour de France with an American team. It's a super special feeling to be racing in the Tour de France with an American team. It's right after Dani won the Dauphiné, so it's motivation for me and the other guys on the team," said the 23-year-old American.
The team includes three-time Tour winner Alberto Bettiol, five-time Tour winner Jens Kekelaar, and number nine Tejay Van Garderen.
"I'm new on the team, but very excited to be part of the biggest race of the year. I've raced with the Colombians before at the Dauphiné. It was my first time racing with them, but I think I had a good feeling during the race as well as the result, and I hope I can do the same in the Tour."
Michael Woods broke his femur in Paris-Nice in March, but rehabbed in time to resume racing. He announced that he will move to Israel's Startup Nation next season.
Tanel Kangert, who will move to Mitchelton Scott, was also not selected, as were the team's road captain Simon Clark (14th in Il Lombardia) and Magnus Korto.
