Martinez: Anything is possible in the Tour de France

If there is a downside to winning one of the biggest races in the world, it is the loss of anonymity and the pressure of everyone talking about you. Daniel Martinez has long been considered a rising star, but his victory at the Criterium du Dauphiné has thrust him into the spotlight ahead of the Tour de France.

But the Colombian has matured beyond his 24 years of age and appears to be accepting the burden of new expectations lightly.

"I'm determined to take whatever happens, good or bad. When things go wrong, I accept it and embrace it. That's my approach to racing," he told a press conference before the EF Pro Cycling Tour. Every day is a new story and anything is possible in the Tour de France."

Martinez sits alongside 2017 Tour runner-up Rigoberto Urán and fellow Colombian youngster Sergio Iguita, and the three will share leadership equally over the next three weeks.

"It's those two that keep me calm," Martinez added. If I'm not doing so well, Rigo will do it, and Sergio will do it."

"The team is doing very well and I am in good shape. The Dauphiné was my first race back and I was in much better shape than the other riders who had been through the other races.

Martinez declined to mention specific goals for his fifth Grand Tour and first with the realistic prospect of being part of the overall contenders. Asked if it was possible to target the white jersey, if not the yellow, he noted that 2019 champion Egan Bernal is still eligible for the young rider award.

"Going for the white jersey would effectively be going for the overall win," the EF Pro Cycling rider said.

Martinez took the title after Jumbo Visma and Ineos controlled the early stages and a disrupted final day when Primoz Roglic and Egan Bernal abandoned.

Martinez predicted that Jumbo Visma and Ineos Grenadiers would be the most influential team in this year's race, arguing that it would give all other teams a chance.

"The battle between Jumbo and Ineos will be very good for us. The other teams will take advantage of that struggle and attack when they are caught off guard."

"This year is a more open Tour de France, with riders who have not raced much, those still waiting for their best form, and those who have already achieved results. There will be a mix of different levels and a lot of surprises. I believe it will work to our advantage and I think we can work well together and find some opportunities."
