UCI President David Lapartient announced on social media that the venue for the 2020 Road World Championships will be announced on Wednesday, September 2, one day later than originally planned.
When the UCI announced the cancellation of the August 12 World Championships in Aigle and Martigny, Switzerland, because the Swiss government's coronavirus restrictions made it impossible to draw more than 1,000 people, the UCI said, "In order to ensure that the 2020 event will be held on the originally scheduled dates in Europe The UCI announced that "the first priority is to hold the event on the dates originally scheduled in Europe to ensure the 2020 Games, and we will work to find alternative projects.
In recent weeks, the event, which will be held September 20-27, has been chosen to host climbs in the Vosges Mountains, including Bardella in Tuscany, Italy, and La Planche des Belles Feuilles, the final stage of this year's Tour de France, in the The Haute-SaƓne department of France is among the candidates.
"The UCI will look for host cities that can offer challenging routes like the Aigle Martigny.
But on Sunday, La Partiente tweeted a photo of France's Bernard Hinault winning the 1980 world championship road race in the French Alps, in Salanche, Haute-Savoie, with the message: "40 years ago, Bernard Hinault was won the rainbow jersey at the spectacular 1980 World Championships in Sarranches.
"I am delighted to announce that the legend of the UCI Road World Championships will continue in 2020 with a new venue. Details will be announced on September 2," the Frenchman wrote.
This somewhat cryptic message could mean that Sarranches will be the new host of the 2020 World Championships, or it could mean that another French venue has been chosen.
