Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) won the crash-prone first stage of this year's Tour de France, not just a stage victory, but the first yellow jersey of the 2020 race. But on the podium, Kristoff was wearing not only his new jersey, but also a pair of Cyclone cycling sunglasses.
Less than 48 hours after Scicon launched its AeroWing and Aeroshade sunglasses, Christophe turned the glitz up to 11 by wearing gold-plated and diamond-encrusted AeroWing sunglasses.
According to Scicon, the sunglasses are adorned with 36 brilliant-cut diamonds, 18 of which are arranged in the shape of the number "1" on each arm of the frame, and are worth approximately €5,000. The sunglasses have bronze-colored lenses and the rest of the frame is white with black rubber ear grips.
Unfortunately for Christophe, he was not given the chance to get his hands on these glasses. Cyclone has since confirmed that the custom glasses could be put on the faces of other sponsored teams, such as NTT Pro Cycling and Israel Startup Nation Given the limitations of COVID-19, if they are to be shared, we hope they are properly cleaned between uses
The glasses are not intended for use on the face of other sponsor teams.
The weight of the glasses was not provided, but given their cost and the shared nature of the prize, they seem to be a podium-only option. Christophe has since been seen wearing the yellow and green replicas of the new "Aero-Shade" sunglasses from Saicon, both in the Maillot Jaune and in the Vert.
This is not the first example of podium-specific eyewear. The most famous example is Peter Sagan, who spends much of his podium time in ski goggles from his eyewear sponsor, 100%.
