On Tuesday, Guillaume Martin accelerated with 500 meters to go in stage 4 of the Tour de France and began his sprint with 200 meters to go in the following summit finish of Orciere-Mellette. Race leader Julien Alaphilippe (Deschuninck-Quick Step) also chased him, but Martin finished third.
As a result, Martin moved up to 5th overall. With this result, Martín moves up to fifth overall, 13 seconds behind Alaphilippe, who still holds the overall lead. Martín's goal of winning a stage and improving on his 12th overall finish in last year's Tour is looking increasingly achievable after the first mountain stage of this year's race.
"It didn't go well, but I would have regretted not attacking in the last 500 meters. But I would have regretted not attacking in the last 500m."
Martin has had a great month, finishing third in the Mont Ventoux-Denivelle Challenge in early August and going toe-to-toe with the world's best climbers in the Tour de l'Ain and Criterium du Dauphiné, finishing third overall in the latter.
"Cortez is a very talented rider.
"After the containment of the coronavirus, there has been a really good change for me. I proved it in the Criterium du Dauphiné and I feel good again here," said Martín. Finishing first in the first mountain stage of the Tour de France is very encouraging for the rest of the race.
Cofidis General Manager Cédric Vasseur also commented, "Guillaume has been in really good form the last few days and is eager to attack. But the Tour de France is a loser's race, so he will have to be patient."
"Today gave me confidence. I got to see him race against the best riders in the world. Seeing how much he has grown over the past few weeks, we can only be optimistic as the Tour continues," Vasseur said.
