Tour de France 2020, Stage 5: Finish Line Words

"It was a heavy finish. It was probably the easiest stage of the bike race because there was no breakaway and it wasn't high paced.

"It was windy and all the sprinters and GC teams wanted to be in front. The last kilometer was a bit of a climb, so I knew it was the right stage for me. I am really happy that the team gave me a chance. I would be even happier if I could finish the race in one shot.

"I think it was important to hold my position. I got behind Sunweb, who had a good lead out on the hard climb, and the moment I saw Bol going in front of me, I set up a sprint. It was pretty hard, but I was on the outside and I think it was about half a lap, but it was enough (Eurosport)

"I don't think anyone wants to take the jersey (the maillot jaune) in this way. I just found out that Julien took a late feed, but as I said before, I don't think anyone wants to take the jersey like this. I wanted to try something tomorrow, but I think tomorrow I will wear the yellow jersey.

"I asked him [Julien Alaphilippe] what happened. He said he drank some milk or a bottle of milk in the last 20km. Like I said before, this is not the way to get the jersey. Tomorrow we have to put on the jersey and fight stage by stage.

"I had already been on the bus for a long time, showered, and was ready to go home. But then the director came to me and said I had to get up here [on the podium]."

"I think it's going to be a big battle [stage 6]. I was going to try something tomorrow anyway. I'm here more for the stage than for the GC. (I think I was in front from 5km to go, but all the riders were very strong. I could feel our confidence as a team. Everyone rode great. I had a good sprint at the end. I don't think I made any mistakes, but unfortunately in cycling you don't always get rewarded because there was one fast rider at the end.

"The sprint was very fast and maybe today was the one time I could have really made the train. Like I said, it was a little bit difficult today, so if you went hard on the front then you're going to have a hard time sitting on your wheels.

"Van Art had a good wheel. I think he took advantage of our train and he was a little faster than us in the last 200 meters. That happens sometimes in this sport. It's not a disappointment when you look at his results, especially in the last month. Of course, it is disappointing, but I am confident that if he continues to run like this, he will win the race. (Team Sunweb)

"Looks like he took a feed in a non-approved area, a 20 second penalty, so the yellow jersey belongs to Yates. I'm waiting for official confirmation. If so, that's what it's going to be. It's the judges' decision, and there's nothing I can do about it.

"It was a very long, very boring stage, and the finale was very nerve-wracking. I had to concentrate to defend the jersey and I was going for the stage win with Sam [Bennett]. But if I did, I'm not worried. Tomorrow I will pick myself up and we won't talk about this anymore." (France Télévisions)

"I have never experienced anything like this after the finish. I'm happy to be green but disappointed not to win. I was so focused on being green that I almost forgot to go for the win. I was so focused on being there that I was concentrating on getting the green and, of course, winning.

"To hold the green jersey for at least one day is a special moment in my career. To follow in their [Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche's] footsteps is great. I am proud to represent Ireland and wear this National Championship jersey.

"I want to enjoy this moment. Having the green and yellow jersey on the team is special. (Frobikes)

"It was an easy day and I knew it was going to be a crazy final. But there was a kick with 2km to go and Mads had to use a lot of energy after switching bikes with 10km to go.

"Then I had to gamble a little bit, but I went a little too far in the corners. I like this finish and it's a shame that the teamwork was a little bit disrupted and not working because of the energy Mads used to come back. We were fifth today and it could have been better. [Today was] a good day. The final was very good. I think people are surprised that the peloton is so tired after only four days. Usually I get tired closer to the first rest day, but this year it seems to be a little earlier than usual. (Trek Segafredo)

"We knew it was going to be a hard, technical race. In the end it was for the best. The riders did a great job. The last three kilometers were inefficient. I braked a lot, lost a few positions, and then made up for it. I lost unnecessary speed [and] when I saw Darryl [Impey] and Jack [Hague] in front of me with a kilometer to go, I knew I had to make a big comeback. I knew it was important to hold my position with a kilometer to go, and I did, but I actually ran out of legs. [but anyway, I'm happy to be up there, and if I can run a little smoother, I should be able to go even higher."

"The stage was very easy. Having been in the Tour for the first time before this year, I thought every day this year I would run out of gas and there would be no easy days in the Tour. But now I can say that's not true. In fact, it was an active recovery for four hours and an explosive finish." (Mitchelton Scott)

"Over half of the stage was pretty easy, but the end was pretty crazy and pretty stressful. The team kept me riding safe around them, and I was able to keep my head down and not get hurt.

"I don't think I can attack for the yellow (jersey) tomorrow. (Froebikes)

"It was very simple. I was at the back of the pack. You can only sprint when you are in a position to sprint and today I was not in a position to sprint. I was not in a position to sprint today. I tried to move up in the standings, but obviously it takes a lot of energy to move up in the standings. I tried to move up but it obviously takes a lot of energy to move up, so I moved up, but I still wasn't in a position to sprint. I knew it was going to be super fast on the downhill with 700 meters to go

"If you lose even one or two wheels, you can't make up positions in the last spurt. I made a mistake today, but I will try again in a few days." (Lot Soudal)
