The future of NTT Pro Cycling (opens in new tab) is apparently threatened by reports that the WorldTour team is looking for sponsorship beyond 2021.
Wielerflits (open in new tab) reports that after rebranding and moving from Dimension Data to parent company NTT this season, the team's contract with the IT company will end at the end of this year, with no replacement or extension
NTT has been working with the team for the past two years.
NTT is the data and technology sponsor of the Tour de France, as well as the title sponsor of the IndyCar motor race in the US, the British Open golf tournament, and the Tokyo Olympics. Last year, NTT extended its contract with the Tour de France through 2024, but there is no news on team sponsorship.
In April, it was reported that the team was looking to extend its sponsorship deal with NTT, and Danish window brand Velux, after Danish Bjarne Riis joined the team as general manager in early 2020 was rumored to be a possible title sponsor.
Riis and his partner, Lars Seier Christensen of Virtu Cycling, were reported at the time to have acquired a one-third stake in the team from team owner Douglas Ryder. However, months later, that deal has not yet materialized and is unlikely to happen.
Rider still owns 100 percent of the team, and the well-informed Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet reported that the "letter of intent" from Riis and Seijl Christensen never resulted in a full contract.
In June, Riis said he still had the intention of becoming part owner of the team, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic (open in new tab), in which the team cut salaries, complicated matters.
"We still have to figure out exactly which direction the team is headed," he said. We are going to have a meeting and get everything in order." [5 including Domenico Pozzovivo, Victor Campenelts, Neo Pro Matteo Sobrero, Dylan Sunderland, and Samuele Battistella With only four months until the start of the 2021 season, the team's out-of-contract riders have reportedly begun to look elsewhere.
The team is also looking for a new team member to join the team.
The team has seven wins in the 2020 season, already matching its win total from the previous two seasons. Giacomo Nizzolo won stage victories at the Tour Down Under and Paris-Nice, as well as the Italian road race and European road race titles.
Asked by Cyclingnews about the team's future, NTT said it is currently focused on the Tour de France (opens in new tab).
