Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) was forced to retire after crashing with 86km remaining in stage 13 of the Tour de France. The Dutch rider was involved in a major crash involving fellow overall contenders Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) and Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale).
The Frenchman and Colombian quickly got up, but the race radio soon informed them that Mollema had retired. After being taken to the hospital and X-rayed, Trek-Segafredo confirmed that Mollema had broken his wrist and forearm.
"Bauquet suffered a compound fracture of the left wrist. It's a fracture of the radius, a fracture of the ulna, and a fracture of the navicular bone. We are waiting for a CT scan to better understand the situation," team doctor Gaetano Daniele said. [At the hospital in Clermont-Ferrand, they had already reduced the fracture of the radius, which caused a compression of the median nerve and caused Bauquet a lot of pain. However, he is just waiting for the scans to be completed to determine when and what kind of surgery will be performed.
Morema started the stage in 13th place on GC, 2:31 behind the yellow jersey. On the stage to Le Puy Marie, teammate and co-leader Richie Porte rode well in the steep finale to move from 11th to 9th overall, 2:06 behind Primoš Roglic.
Morema, 33, came into the race off to a strong start since the race resumed in August. He finished fourth in the defense of his Il Lombardia title and finished in the top 10 in both the Tour de Ain and La Route d'Occitanie.
He and Porte lost time in the crosswind on stage 7 of the Tour, but climbed well in the race before the major mountain stages of Massif Santoral and the Alps.
