Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) rewound the year on stage 13 of the Tour de France with his best performance of the race so far.
The Australian finished the stage to Puy Marie in Massif Central in 14th place after a breakaway victory by Daniel Martinez (EF Pro Cycling). Despite losing a small amount of time to race leader Primoš Roglic (Jumbo Visma) and second-place finisher Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates), Porte put in the best ride of his career to shorten the time on all of his rivals, Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and Romain With Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) losing time and dropping out of the overall top 10, Porte moved up from 11th to 9th place. Porte, 35, heads into stage 14 with a 2:06 lead over Roglic in the yellow jersey.
"The last climb was super hard and there was the first explosion in the bunch. But on the last climb, in the last kilometer, I recognized the climb of the 2016 Tour.
Pogachar attacked twice on the final climb and only Roglic could follow, but Porte led a small group that included Mikel Landa and Miguel Angel Lopez, GC contenders Nairo Quintana, Rigoberto Urán, and last year's winner Egan Bernal cleared the rest of the field.
"The two Slovenians are the strongest riders in the race, and to finish right behind them is a good result, and it feels good to be able to give time to the other guys in the top 10," Porte added.
"The climb is still short and the only hard part was the last two kilometers. The Grand Colombier on Sunday is where the time difference will be bigger, so I just want to get through Saturday and refuel tonight because it was a hard day."
However, with 86km to go, Bauke Mollema crashed. The Dutch rider, who was also fighting for a top-10 finish in Paris, was forced to leave the race by ambulance. He was later diagnosed with a broken left wrist and could be out for the entire season.
"We lost Bauke in a crash after about 100 km. We wish him well, but after that it was difficult to focus on racing again. The guys were really good, they put me in a good position and I had a good leg today," Porte said.
"It's very bittersweet, but hopefully the next two days will be hard stages.
