Bardet 'lost a small amount of blood' in Tour de France crash

Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) was forced to retire after crashing on stage 13 of the Tour de France.

Bardet completed the 191.5 km stage to Puy Marie, finishing 2:30 behind yellow jersey and race leader Primoš Roglic (Jumbo Visma). However, he was diagnosed with concussion and was unable to start stage 14.

An initial physical examination revealed no brain lesions, but an MRI scan revealed bleeding, and the Frenchman said he was still suffering from nausea after the accident.

"Yesterday afternoon, under the comforting words of @vlavenu, I never imagined that my @letourdefrance would suddenly end," Bardet wrote on his Instagram account. [I've had a headache and nausea ever since. An MRI this morning confirmed a small hemorrhage due to concussion. He should recover soon with indefinite rest. Thanks for your message.

Bardet crashed on a corner with around 90km to go, along with several other riders. Bardet took some time to get back on his bike after this accident and fell to the ground when he first tried to stand up. He was able to rejoin the group, but fell off the bike on the final climb.

Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) and Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) also fell in the same accident. Quintana was able to resume, but Mollema immediately abandoned and was later diagnosed with a broken wrist.
