Overall leader Annemiek Van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) and three-time stage winner Marianne Vos (CCC-Liv) crashed in a group sprint on stage 7 of the Giro Rosa.
Van Vleuten was taken to the hospital complaining of wrist pain, and race organizers confirmed that her teammate Amanda Spratt was also involved in the crash with a suspected collarbone injury.
CCC-Liv confirmed that Voss suffered abrasions but no broken bones. CCC-Liv said, "Aside from some abrasions on her back, she has no major injuries."
Mitchelton-Scott confirmed that Van Vleuten and Spratt are currently being examined at the hospital, but have not confirmed any injuries at this time.
"Race leaders Annemiek van Vleuten and Amanda Spratt both crossed the line and were taken to the hospital to be evaluated for injuries. Mitchelton-Scott confirmed that "further updates will be provided as facts become available."
Van Vleuten, Spratt, and Vos were part of a small group sprinting to the finish line in Maddaloni, but all three crashed on the straightaway in the last kilometer of the stage. Vos was the first to fall due to wheel contact, followed by Spratt and then Van Vleuten.
Van Vleuten got up, got on his bike, and continued to ride with only one hand on the handlebars, sustaining abrasions on his left wrist, elbow, and chin.
All three riders crossed the finish line, but Van Vleuten and Spratt appeared to suffer the most from the fall. Van Vleuten crossed the finish line with a clenched wrist and Spratt with a clenched collarbone. Vos appeared at the awards ceremony as the points award leader and was able to speak with the press.
Van Vleuten now leads the overall standings with two stages remaining in his quest for his third consecutive overall win at the Giro Rosa.
Vos won three stages in this year's race, bringing her total number of victories in women's Grand Tours to 28. She also leads the points standings.
Mavi Garcia and Tatiana Gudelso (Yale), Erika Magnardi (Serratigit-WNT), and Omer Shapira (Canyon-SRAM) were also involved in crashes.
Van Breuten and Vos will represent the Netherlands at the 2020 UCI Road World Championships in Imola, September 24-27. Spratt will also represent Australia at the world championships.
