Tour de France 2020 Stage 18: Finish Line Words

"That was one of those days. Words cannot express how grateful I am to the whole team and to Richard [Karapas]. It was an incredible day for us and we will never forget it. We had some great moments in the cycling, but that was something new. The last few kilometers gave me goosebumps, we both really enjoyed the last few kilometers. I can't believe it [I have a lot to celebrate tonight. We had a show today and we have to enjoy it." (Eurosport)

"It was our last chance. The team was on top, but Jumbo Visma was too fast, and it's a shame we couldn't do more as a result. That's the way it was. It was a great effort by the team and they did really well. (Eurosport)

"In braking it's always comfortable because you don't have to fight for position. Especially in the last week of the Tour and in the Grand Tours, the break often lasts until the finish. I've already had two good results from the break, so today was another chance.

"I was surprised that the break was so fast, but I was in a big group with Matteo. But I was in a big group with Matteo, it was a different feeling than the first week, maybe the third week is my favorite."

(On Ineos' attack) "They surprised everyone a little bit. Everyone knew they wanted to be in the breakaway and that they were going for the stage win. But it was a bit of a surprise to see them attack so early. But they were very strong. Even with me at the wheel, it was very difficult to keep up with them. (CCC Team)

"Yesterday and today were two hard races in a row. Yesterday and today were two hard days. There was a lot of climbing and always lots of space to do different things. On Richie Porte's puncture: "I didn't know. That's the safest thing to do. So far things are going really well with the team, but there are still some tricky days ahead. After the time trial, the standings will be decided, but tomorrow we have to focus again. It's not safe yet." (Eurosport)

"It was one of the toughest stages on the profile. It was really hard. Jumbo did a great job and controlled the whole stage. I tried my best on the last climb, but it was impossible. My legs weren't as good as the other guys. At the end it all came together and we sprinted for third place. It was a good day for the team. I am happy with their performance. Primo Roglic and I are both happy that nothing happened on the gravel where we could have had a puncture. It was a good day. We didn't know that Richie [Porte] had a puncture, but we knew he was behind us. I'm glad he's back because if he loses a good position [overall] because of a puncture, it would be unfortunate for him."

"I felt good and I got some points for the mountains jersey. I tried to come back but it didn't work out. Calapaz had a bit of a gap and I wanted to close it.

"I was on different tires again and I wasn't used to these tires. I took too many risks. No, no, it's not about winning the Super Combattif. I'm going to fight anyway. It's the Tour de France, so I'm just going to fight to the end."

"It was a hard day, but we came through without any problems and I'm happy to finish with the best riders. Once again the team did a great job for me and I was able to conserve my energy for the last and most difficult climb. The pace of the group was so fast on the last climb that I couldn't really try anything."

"The gravel section was a bit dangerous but I made it through. I am happy to have kept my overall position and to have closed the time gap to the other riders. We have one more stage to go in Paris. On Saturday we have a tough individual time trial. Every time trial is different and the time trial on stage 20 of the Tour de France is very different from other races. All I can do is just give it my all. But first I have to ride tomorrow's stage well.

"At the start of the stage I knew it was a very important stage and I knew the riders would help me because (Matteo) Trentin and (Peter) Sagan would have taken a lot of points. I concentrated on the intermediate sprints first, and the rest of the stage wasn't much fun.

"I found myself in a big breakaway group and some of the guys weren't happy. [I was happy to get some points and now that I have over 50 points I feel more comfortable if something goes wrong. When we went into the first big climb I was able to ride my tempo and stay calm. I didn't expect the guys behind me to come up that fast. This will not stop until Paris. I'm optimistic, but I'm trying not to think about it just in case."
