Hirschi crashes out of second Tour de France stage win

Marc Hirsch attacked on the descents of the 2020 Tour de France in three stages, eventually winning on stage 12 in Salins. However, the Sunweb rider's insatiable desire to attack, especially on the descents, proved his undoing on stage 18, La Roche-sur-Follon.

After winning the first three mountain sprints from the day's breakaway group and racking up 17 points toward the polka-dot jersey, the Swiss rider suffered a rare slip on the Col des Saisies descent.

"I felt good and got some points toward the mountains jersey," he said. I tried to come back but it didn't work out."

Hirschi was selected along with final stage winner Michal Kwiatkowski, Polish rider teammate Richard Karapas, and Pero Bilbao of Bahrain McLaren. Kalapas was a little further back and I wanted to close the gap, but he was on different tires and I wasn't used to these tires. I took too many risks," Hirschi admitted. [He] went too fast on the left corner and slipped. It sucked because I had already scored points for the mountains jersey. But my legs were good and I crashed. I'm disappointed."

The Swiss rider suffered abrasions on his arms and legs and finished 13th behind race leader Primoš Roglic's (Jumbo Visma) group.

"It hurt, but I think I'll be ok tomorrow. It was definitely a little scary on the descent. I did my best, but when I saw the gap widening, I exploded too."

The bitter disappointment was tempered by the most aggressive rider award. I'm not going to fight anyway," he said. I'll fight anyway. I'll fight anyway. It's the Tour de France, so I'm going to fight anyway, to the end."

He also said that he would "fight until the end.
